The oil industry is facing enormous challenges. Investments are becoming increasingly difficult, ecologically questionable, and costly due to the deteriorating quality of reservoirs. Despite the fundamental issue of environmental compatibility, fossil fuels will be an integral part of the energy markets in the coming decades. However, refineries must switch to more cost and energy intensive practices to process the lower quality raw materials into marketable products. On the other hand, only fractions of waste hydrocarbons are being recycled and transformed into high value fuels or other raw materials e.g., chemical industry.
